Clash Royale: Best Evo Goblin Cage Decks

Goblin Cage has recently seen a rise to the top of the meta thanks to its ability to counter a huge number of threats. The evolution for Goblin Cage has always been good, so it’s nice to see it getting some well-deserved attention. In this article I’ll briefly take a look at what Goblin Cage is in general, then I’ll get into three great decks featuring it!

How to Play Goblin Cage & Its Evolution

Goblin Cage is one of the best cards in Clash Royale. Its biggest strength is that it’s so strong at defending, both with and without the evolution. Since it starts as a building, it’s able to distract troops like any other building would. But it’s unique because the building itself doesn’t do anything (unless evolved, but even then it’s different). However, once the cage has been destroyed, the Goblin within is unleashed. He’s not the strongest troop in the world, but he does solid damage and he’s really fast. This lets the Goblin Cage counter a ton of threats, defend pretty well, and provide a counter push via the Goblin. It’s a perfect card for defending.

The Goblin Cage evolution simply makes it even better for defense. With the evolution, the cage pulls in a nearby troop and damages it significantly. This neutralizes the troop until the Goblin Cage breaks, allowing it counter almost anything. Giants, Hog Riders, Wall Breakers, and more are no threat to Goblin Cage.

Goblin Cage + Royal Recruits

Cards:

  • Goblin Cage (Evo)
  • Royal Recruits (Evo)
  • Musketeer (Hero)
  • Golden Knight (Hero)
  • Zappies
  • Electro Spirit
  • Arrows
  • The Log

This deck takes advantage of one of Goblin Cage’s biggest strengths–counter pushing. Since the Goblin it creates is a pretty good brawler, it’s worth backing up with a handful of other troops like Zappies, Golden Knight, Musketeer, etc. Royal Recruits fills the second evolution slot, which I like due to the sheer number of troops it creates. Royal Recruits covers the battlefield in Recruits, defending both sides at once and taking out tanks with ease. Both Goblin Cage and Royal Recruits work well with a counter pushing strategy, so they’re a great combo together.

To go with the chaos that Royal Recruits and Goblin Cage bring to the arena, we also have one of the best heroes in the game, Golden Knight. The Golden Knight’s ability allows him to clear any ground troop in an instant and also do significant damage to other troops and/or buildings. His speed and ability to clear large waves makes him a perfect troop for the high speed strategies this deck utilizes. Zappies, on the other hand, slow things down. Even though they’re slow, however, they’re great for backing up faster troops. Put them behind Golden Knight or in a big group of troops to back them up, or just save them for defending.

I always love an aggressive deck, so this is perfect. Golden Knight and Royal Recruits push the pace so that Goblin Cage can take advantage of it, while the defense we have is so strong that we really don’t have to worry about much of anything. This is a really fun deck to play, so I highly recommend checking it out.

Goblin Cage + Balloon

Cards:

  • Goblin Cage (Evo)
  • Bats (Evo)
  • Archer Queen (Hero)
  • Balloon (Hero)
  • Fireball
  • Miner
  • Skeletons
  • Barbarian Barrel

Since Goblin Cage is so good at defending, it leaves the door open to focus on other things. This deck is all about using Miner to tank tower shots for Balloon so it can take out a tower in one attempt. Archer Queen helps with this by supporting Balloon and defending it from threats like Mega Minion and the normal Minions or other fliers, and even Bats can help back it up. In general, this deck plays just like any Balloon deck. You can be patient and wait for a perfect opportunity since Balloon can take out a tower so quickly, and Goblin Cage’s defensive capabilities allow this all to work flawlessly.

To best use Goblin Cage with this deck, you’ll want to focus on letting your opponents play something you can counter with it before using Balloon. If you can counter their win con (hopefully something like Hog Rider that can be easily dealt with) without them realizing you’re playing a Balloon deck, you’re in a great spot. Goblin Cage isn’t indicative of a Balloon deck, so you can typically keep it hidden for quite a while if you want. If you can surprise your opponent with a big Balloon push that they aren’t expecting, it’ll be hugely effective.

This deck is definitely one of the more aggressive ones you can play, as are most Balloon-based decks. Goblin Cage is so strong at defense that it enables more aggression since you don’t have to worry as much. It’s just such a strong card right now that it feels like you have to use it. Or at the very least, you have to be ready for it.

Goblin Cage + Goblin Barrel

Cards:

  • Goblin Cage (Evo)
  • Goblin Barrel (Evo)
  • Mini P.E.K.K.A. (Hero)
  • Skeleton King (Hero)
  • Dart Goblin
  • Goblin Gang
  • Vines
  • The Log

For this last Goblin Cage deck, I’ve decided to go with a classic. This is primarily a Log Bait deck, meaning it focuses on making opponents waste their Log (or similar effect) so Goblin Barrel doesn’t get countered. Most players have either the Log, Barbarian Barrel, or some other cheap spell that will largely counter the Barrel. If you can get your opponent to waste that spell on your less important (but still impactful) threats like Dart Goblin and Goblin Gang, then they won’t have it when you play Goblin Barrel. Due to this, Skeleton King is also a really strong hero to use since it benefits from all the cheap Goblins that will be dying.

For the second hero card in this deck, I have Mini P.E.K.K.A. Overall I think he’s the weakest of the 4 new heroes, but the troop itself is still really strong. He can still counter tanks just as effectively as always, so the hero ability is still something to consider. The rest of this deck is all focused on baiting Logs, spamming swarms, and trying to cause a bunch of chaos. All these Goblins running around is enough to overwhelm many decks, and that’s what we’re relying on. While the individual cards here aren’t hard to counter, being able to deal with our frantic pace is the problem. Even if your opponent has multiple cards to counter our Goblins, our speed is still going to make them hard to deal with.

This deck, like the others, is aggressive. But this one even more so. If you aren’t the aggressor with this deck, then you’ll probably end up the loser. Defending is mostly an afterthought since the Goblins can deal with that while they attack, and if you let your opponent have time to think then you’re probably playing too slowly.
